VAT Calculator (UK): Add or Remove 20% VAT
Add VAT to a price, or take it out of a price that already includes it.
| Price excluding VAT (net) | £100.00 |
|---|---|
| VAT at 20% | £20.00 |
| Price including VAT (gross) | £120.00 |
How to work out VAT
| To | At 20% |
|---|---|
| Add VAT | Multiply the price by 1.2 |
| Remove VAT | Divide the price including VAT by 1.2 |
| Find the VAT in a gross price | Divide by 6 (one sixth of the gross price is VAT) |
Example: £100 plus 20% VAT is £120. £120 including VAT is £100 before VAT, of which £20 is VAT.
UK VAT rates
- Standard rate 20% applies to most goods and services.
- Reduced rate 5% applies to things like home energy and children’s car seats.
- Zero rate 0% applies to most food, children’s clothes and books. VAT is charged, but at nothing.
Some things are exempt from VAT, such as insurance and many education and health services. Businesses must register for VAT once their taxable turnover goes over the registration threshold; check the current figure on GOV.UK.
