Do I Need to Do a Self Assessment Tax Return?
Most employees paid through PAYE never need to file a tax return. These are the situations where you do.
You usually need one if
- You are self-employed and earned more than £1,000 (before expenses).
- You are a partner in a business partnership.
- You get rental income above the property allowance of £1,000, or more than £2,500 profit after expenses.
- You had other untaxed income, such as from tips, commission or foreign income.
- Your income was over £150,000.
- You sold assets that gave you a taxable capital gain.
- You or your partner receive Child Benefit and income over £60,000 — see the Child Benefit charge.
Deadlines
The online return and payment are due by 31 January after the tax year ends. You must register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year. Missing the deadline can bring an automatic penalty. See tax dates and deadlines.
If you are not sure
GOV.UK has a free “check if you need to send a tax return” tool. If you are asked by HMRC to file one, you must, even if you think you owe nothing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Self Assessment deadline?
31 January after the end of the tax year for online returns and payment. Paper returns are due earlier, on 31 October.
Do I need a tax return if I only have one job?
Usually not, because your employer deducts tax through PAYE. You may need one if you have other income, or are told to by HMRC.
