First year vehicle tax£455 paid when the car is first registered. After that it is £200 a year.
Vehicle tax rates
First year (registration)£455
Standard rate from the second payment£200 a year
Expensive car supplement (not due: list price is under £40,000)£0
Yearly vehicle tax after the first year£200

The supplement applies to cars with a list price over £40,000 and lasts for five years from the second time the car is taxed. Pay monthly by Direct Debit and you pay £210 instead of £200 a year for the standard rate.

How vehicle tax works

For cars registered on or after 1 April 2017 you pay a first-year rate based on CO2 emissions when the car is first registered, then a flat £200 a year standard rate. Cars with a list price over £40,000 (£50,000 for electric cars) pay an extra £440 a year for five years from the second payment.

Example: a £30,000 petrol car with 120g/km pays £455 in the first year, then £200 a year. A £55,000 electric car pays £10 in the first year, then £640 a year, because of the supplement.

Paying

You can pay every 12 months or in 12 monthly Direct Debit payments (at £210 instead of £200 for the standard rate). Tax your vehicle only on GOV.UK to avoid paying extra to a third-party site. Cars are not taxed automatically when you buy them: the new keeper must tax the vehicle.
