How the date of Black Friday is worked out

The date follows the American calendar: US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, and Black Friday is the day after. In the UK it has no official status, but retailers copy the date and many start their offers earlier or run them over a whole week. Cyber Monday, traditionally for online deals, is the Monday after.

Good to know

  • Not a bank holiday or an official UK event; the date follows the US calendar.
  • Most online purchases can be cancelled within 14 days of receiving the goods under consumer contract rules, which also applies to Black Friday buys.
  • Before you buy, compare prices elsewhere: a “was” price should be a genuine previous price.

Black Friday is the Friday after US Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November) and is now the start of the Christmas sales season for many UK shops, often with deals running for days or weeks either side.
