How to check what you could claim

  • Use the free benefits calculator on GOV.UK, which works out what you could get from your circumstances.
  • Many benefits are not paid automatically. If you think you qualify, you usually have to apply, and some can be backdated only for a short time.
  • Claiming one benefit can unlock others, for example Pension Credit can lead to help with housing costs, council tax, the Warm Home Discount and a free TV licence for over-75s.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

These rates are for Great Britain. Scotland has taken over some disability and carer benefits (such as Adult Disability Payment instead of PIP, and Carer Support Payment instead of Carer’s Allowance). Northern Ireland runs its own social security system, so check nidirect.gov.uk for rates there.

Every figure comes from the GOV.UK page named on each benefit’s page, checked 8 October 2026. See what’s changing and how we check our figures.
