How teacher pay works

Classroom teachers in England are paid on the main pay range (M1 to M6) and can then apply for the upper pay range (U1 to U3). Teachers in and around London are paid more, with separate rates for the fringe, Outer London and Inner London. School leaders, leading practitioners and teachers with extra responsibilities (TLR payments) are paid on separate ranges.

These scales are for England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set teachers’ pay separately.
